First Look: The Kwikset Kevo Lock

The Key That’s Always With You

I hate carrying keys. While the smart phone has absorbed just about everything else I carry in my pockets, the keychain seems to be the one item I can’t shake. My notebook is gone, my wallet has shrunk, but my keychain still carries the weight of a medieval weapon.

If you’re tired of tearing holes in your skinny jeans, the Kwikset Kevo deadbolt might be just the solution you’re looking for. Resembling a standard deadbolt, the Kevo hides some high-tech secrets that allow it to communicate with your smart phone. Using a low energy Bluetooth connection, the Kevo senses when you’re nearby, allowing you to lock or unlock the door with the just tap of your finger. No more grocery bag gymnastics or fumbling for your keys when the kids lock the doors.

That’s not the only trick up its sleeve… The Kevo also allows you to assign temporary or time sensitive virtual keys that sound brilliant to this busy family. Imagine creating self-destructive keys for your repairman or time-sensitive passes for the babysitter… That’s some great peace-of-mind.

If you’re considering a smart lock for your house, the Kevo is definitely worth a look. It’s available now for $199.

I’ll cover it in greater detail in a future smart-lock shootout. Stay tuned!

  • I’m skeptical about the whole ‘knows when you’re outside or inside’ thing. I worry about having my phone in my pocket, coming to the door, and suddenly the person outside can unlock the door just by touching the lock. :/ I guess they have a sensor on the interior part of the door too, and if it detects you as closer than the outside-the-door sensor detects, it doesn’t unlock?

    • They seem pretty confident about that; in fact, I think that’s a big part of the patented tech that they’re using. It’s looking like I might have some hands-on experience with the Kevo soon, so I’ll let you know what I find out.
