REVIEW: Brooklinen Bed Sheets

REVIEW: Brooklinen Bed Sheets

Thread where it counts.

Even though our blog leans toward smart home and technology gadgets, one of the best upgrades we’ve made to our home was making the switch to an awesome Tuft and Needle mattress last year. It’s funny, you spend 1/3 of your life asleep, but that seems to be the last thing a family wants to invest in.

Our current sheets were a wedding gift from 2005, so I jumped at the opportunity to make another sleep upgrade when Brooklinen provided us with a set of their “Luxe” sheets to put through the paces. You’ve seen their ads all over the internet… can they really make a difference in your bedroom? Read on to find out!

What Does It Claim to Do?

Brooklinen is a bedding company that claims to offer top quality sheets and accessories using only premium materials at an affordable price.

Specs

  • Luxe Hardcore Sheet Bundle
  • 480 Thread Count
  • Long-staple Egyptian Cotton
  • Singly ply yarn

Do all of those buzz words make a difference in daily use? Let’s dive in.

Look and Feel

Brooklinen Box

It takes a special kind of person to get excited about bed sheets, but I guess I don’t know myself as well as I think I do. When our Luxe Hardcore Sheet Bundle arrived, I intended to leave it in the box until I had time to take a look at it later in the weekend, but that suspiciously well-designed shipping box kept calling to me; then, I made the mistake of opening it.

Brooklinen Bag

Now, packaging really has nothing to do with the quality of the product within, but sometimes it can be foreshadowing to a great customer experience… That’s definitely what happened with these Brooklinen sheets. Immediately upon opening that box, we found a sheet set neatly contained in a gray bag with flourishes that felt like something you’d purchase from a hipster store front (in a good way).

So, that’s a pretty good impression right out of the gate; what about, you know, the actual sheets? They feel incredible. They have a buttery satin finish out of the box that is leagues beyond whatever abomination we’ve been sleeping on up until this point. We ordered a simple white set, so there’s really nothing remarkable to mention (or photograph), but if you’re used to sleeping in the same Walmart clearance sheets you purchased in college, you and your spouse will feel like royalty on these things.

Sleep Experience

This is really hard to describe, and it’s purely subjective, but I’ll give it a shot. Sleeping on our old sheets a few nights out of the washer felt a bit like wearing the same tshirt for a few days in a row. It works, but there’s something that feels a little coarse on your skin. These Brooklinen sheets feel silky smooth night after night, and they seem to be getting softer with every wash. We watch TV in bed a lot (don’t hate), and sometimes I’ve found myself rubbing the sheets between my fingers just appreciating the quality. Yeah, I’m a weirdo.

Brooklinen Sheet Texture

One other thing worth mentioning here is sleeping temperature. Our old sheets were about half of the Brooklinen Luxe’s 480 thread count, which I think made them a bit more breathable. Since we’ve been using these in the summer months, I was initially a little warmer at night until I got adjusted to it; something worth considering if you’re a hot sleeper.

Quality

You’re probably not up on your sheet terminology, but Brooklinen promises that their sheets are made with all of the top materials your grandmother would tell you to look for. They use “long-staple” Egyptian cotton to produce smooth weaves. They use single ply yarn to produce strong, thin threads. The Luxe sheets are 480 thread count according to an honest standard that counts actual threads vs the strands contained in a thread.

All of that adds up to a sheet that’s going to last you years and grow softer as you use it (instead of falling apart over time). It’s a great product.

Affordability

Sheets are all over the place when it comes to pricing, which makes it difficult to assess what is actually a good deal. I’ve seen cheaper sheets with a “similar” thread count at discount stores. I’ve seen name brand sheets at big box stores with lower thread counts for far more than these. The set I chose from Brooklinen is $250 for King-sized high-end sheets (included fitted sheets), 4 pillow cases, and a duvet cover; that feels like a good price.

Conclusion

We love these sheets, and I think your family would love them too. This is the kind of purchase you make when you just want to buy a fantastic product for a fair price without wasting a weekend doing comparison shopping over nitpicky spec charts. If you’re tired of sleeping in the same ratty sheets you’ve suffered with since the Bush administration, go treat yourself to a little Brooklinen luxury; I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

  • This company has very poor customer service. There is no phone contact number. I sent several emails with no response. I am due a refund for over a month now and have not received it. Not only that, but these sheets are not that outstanding as you would lead people to believe. do they compensate you for this review????

    • Janet – My experience has been the opposite. They did provide the sheets for the review, but I wasn’t compensated in any way; my opinions are always my own, and if I run into trouble for any reason, I let my readers know.

Have you tried reaching out on Twitter/Facebook as well? They were extremely responsive with my questions there. We’re still very happy with our sheets and the quality of the product.

Sorry you had a bad experience!

  • I ordered a pair of sheets from Brooklinen. I was excited to own “the softest sheets on the market,” replacing a pair that I loved but did not match my new comforter.

I was disappointed, to say the least. The sheets are mediocre. I don’t understand the positive reviews online, except maybe that it is a clever trick of paid sponsorship. That is the only thing that comes to mind. I have purchased sheets from Bed Bath & Beyond for half the price and without question, they are infinitely softer. Perhaps you’re a fan of scratchy sheets? That’s fine, to each his own, but don’t advertise your company as selling premium sheets when they are expensive garbage.

I asked friends at my Thanksgiving party which they preferred, not telling them the brands. They chose my ratty old sheets over these “luxury” Brooklinen ones. I asked my girlfriend which she preferred. She told me I should return the Brooklinen ones.

My advice is to not be fooled by these raving customer reviews. I can assure you, if you have owned a pair of truly good sheets (these are not so hard to find, people act like we haven’t used bed sheets for centuries), you will be disappointed. I was. Five friends were. My girlfriend was. I expect this company will become very popular among people who have very low expectations, which is fine, Brooklinen can target whatever market it wants, but save yourself the hassle of ordering and returning these crummy sheets. If you truly want online sheets, invest in a company that has been around for longer than a couple years and which entire industries (i.e. hotels) have relied on for decades. They may be around the same price point (though many, many are cheaper), but at least you know you’re getting quality.

  • I have noticed you don’t monetize your blog,
don’t waste your traffic, you can earn extra cash every

  • I purchased two sheets from Brooklinen. I was thrilled to acquire “the market’s softest linens” to replace a pair that I adored but did not match my new comforter.
