Are You Ready for a Home Renovation? Here’s How to Tackle it

The following contribution is from another author.

When it comes to the idea of starting a home renovation, it can often be quite intimidating. After all, when we think about renovating our home, we think about a lot of construction, stress, mess, and disruption. It can also come with a hefty price tag. But if it’s something that you know you would like to do, or you’ve bought a property that needs fixing up, it’s important that you tackle it in the right way. In this blog post, we’re going to take a look at how you can do that.

1. Create a Plan

Before you get started on anything, you are likely to find that having a plan makes a huge difference. If you are doing major works, then you will need to have a project manager on board or an architect. This will enable you to have a very clear plan of action for what needs to be done and in what order. Either way, this can take the stress out of what needs doing.

2. Get Quotes for Major Works First

If you are considering doing major construction work such as extending your property, converting different spaces, or even knocking down walls and changing the layout, it’s important to get quotes for this first. This will be the most important part of the renovation, and it is also the first step, so it’s important to get this underway in the beginning.

3. Focus on Decorative Changes That Go a Long Way

If you don’t plan on doing any major construction work, then you may want to focus purely on the decorative side of things, or once you have finished your construction you need to get on with the interiors, either way. For this, you may find that heading to a flooring discount store and picking up new flooring and carpets for the whole house can make a huge difference. Alongside that, changing the paint colours in your rooms can also freshen things up and make the house look brand new.

4. Add a Personal Touch

When you have the shell of the house ready, and all of the major decorative options are chosen and in place, you can then start bringing in your own take on things. Knowing what you like in terms of interior design styles is key here because this is going to enable you to create a personal touch and make your home feel like your own rather than a cookie-cutter property.

5. Focus on Adding Value, Not Overspending!

However, as you’re going through this process, it’s really important that you focus on adding value to the property overall. Or, you need to ensure that you’re aware of your ceiling price at the very least. The last thing you want to do here is to spend too much and find that you’re actually losing money on the property. Even if you don’t intend on selling anytime soon, it’s wise to be aware of a maximum price you would likely get for the property and stay within that overall. It’s okay to spend what you like, particularly if it means your home is now how you want it and you get enjoyment out of it. But it should also make financial sense too!
