How to Prepare for a Long Haul Move

The following contribution is from another author.

Moving home is an exciting time, but it’s also quite stressful with all the things that have to be organized and arranged in order for the move to happen smoothly. As much as moving locally is stressful, it can be even more so when you’re planning a move that’s a bit further afield – for example if you’re moving across the country or even outside of the country.

So, in this post we’re going to share with you some of our top tips for how to prepare for a long haul move so that it can go as easily and stress-free as possible for you and your family.

Ensure you have the correct permission

Of course, if you’re moving within the country, then this probably won’t apply, but if you’re moving to another country, then you’ll need to make sure you have things like visas, work permits and even insurance in place. Although, if you’re moving for work, then there’s a good chance that your employer will be taking care of all this stuff for you; in the event that they’re not, then you’re going to need to make sure you know what you need on your own so that you can do it as needed.

Decide what to do with your stuff

When it comes to moving far away, you’re still going to have to figure out what to do with your stuff. If you’re moving to another country then you may not want to take any or all of your stuff with you; in this case you could either sell it or even put it in storage if you’re only going to be leaving for a shorter period of time and know that you’ll be coming back.

Organize movers

If you’re definitely decided that you’re taking your stuff with you, then you should start looking for moving companies in your area for some quotes so that you can see what offers are out there. Some companies will even specialize in international and long haul removals, so if you’re looking for the most cost-effective way to do this, then it’s a good idea to shop around with some different companies.

Arrange to travel separately

Although this option may not appeal to everyone, if you’re moving across the country or to another country with children or a family then a good solution could be for you and your partner to arrange to travel to the new house separately. The reasoning for this is that if you don’t go together then one of you can travel with the kids and the other can go ahead to set up the house and get everything organized. That way, when the others arrive, there’s not as much chaos as there would be if everyone arrives together. You and your partner should obviously do what works best for your family, but this is definitely an option to think about that works for a lot of people and could alleviate a lot of the stress of moving.
