Proper Carpet Care: Everything You Need to Know

Most homes have some carpet within them. Whether you’re the type of person who likes carpet throughout your home (excluding the kitchen and bathroom, of course) or whether you prefer hardwood but do enjoy carpet in cosier spaces such as the bedroom, chances are, there’s at least one room in your home that is carpeted. Now, many people neglect their carpets, taking them for granted. But you should make sure to take good care of this element of your home, as good carpet maintenance can make the entire space more presentable and can reduce replacement costs down the line. Here are some tips that can help with this.

Choosing the Right Carpet

You can care for your carpet as best as possible, but if you choose the wrong carpet for the location you’re carpeting in the first place, you can still experience issues, damage and unnecessary wear and tear once it’s fitted. Not all carpets are created equal. Some are designed for low traffic areas, some are designed for high traffic areas. Some serve the purpose of being rugged and collecting dirt, while others are supposed to plush and warm underfoot. It’s absolutely essential that you put some thought into the process of choosing the right carpets when you’re initially shopping. Choose hardy, durable and flatter weave carpets for areas such as the hallways in your home, where people will walk back and forth multiple times a day. Save softer, fluffier, plusher carpets for rooms with less footfall, such as bedrooms. If you have pets, you may want to avoid loop carpets too – these can get caught in your pet’s claws, potentially hurting them and also resulting in pulls in your carpet pile.

Vacuuming

Make sure to vacuum your carpets regularly. Ideally, you should be doing this at least once a week. This will lift debris from your carpet, such as pet hair, your own hair, dried dirt, spilled crumbs and more.

Carpet Cleaning

Vacuuming shouldn’t be where your carpet cleaning venture ends. Sure, vacuuming is important as a routine chore that lifts crumbs and debris from the floor. However, you do need to thoroughly clean your carpet too. This deep cleaning process will lift dirt from the pile and leave your carpets fresh and clean. You have two options – wet cleaning or dry, chemical cleaning. Wet cleaning will use detergent to clean your carpets in a way similar to clothes washing. Using dry cleaning, offered by Coastal Care Chem-Dry, you use a dry cleaning process – the equivalent of dry cleaning for clothes.

Shoes

This may sound simple, but so many people ignore this straightforward piece of advice. Shoes are outdoor wear. You should remove your shoes before entering your home, or as soon as you enter your home. By removing shoes, you can reduce pressure on your carpets (which can wear them down), as well as excess dirt coming from outdoors and being trod into your carpets (which can stain, mark and otherwise damage your carpet).

These simple steps should help your carpets to stand the test of time, so give them a go!
