This is understandable, especially if you are raising a family or have always dreamed of having a home cinema.  However, packing up and moving to a bigger property isn’t always an option – especially when it comes to your finances. 

Fortunately, however, there are plenty of ways in which you can make the most of the space you have available to you, meaning you won’t feel as though you’ve outgrown your home. 

Get rid of the clutter. 

Getting rid of the clutter in your home is an excellent way to make better use of the space, as it means you’re no longer surrounded by piles and piles of clutter in every room. Furthermore, in addition to keeping your home in order, studies have shown that decluttering is good for your health and mental well-being. 

While decluttering can be time-consuming, it is definitely worth the effort. Furthermore, if you come across any items you no longer need or use, you can resell them – which puts more money in your pocket. 

Get creative with storage. 

The more storage options you have, the more ‘free’ space you will have throughout your home. As a result, now is the perfect time to invest in different forms of storage units. For example, you could install an over bonnet storage locker in your garage, which can be used to store a various household items or tools for your car. 

You may also want to invest in multi-functional  furniture, such as sofas with built in-storage underneath the seats. This way, every inch of your home is being used wisely, and you don’t have to clutter up the space. 

Use your basement. 

An alarming number of house owners do not use their basements whatsoever, and of those that do, few use them efficiently, often dumping items in there without any sense of order or structure. 

Fortunately, there are many ways in which you can make your basement storage-friendly. For example, instead of simply hanging some shelves, you should split the basement into different ‘zones’ and store items according to this. This will make finding what you are looking for easier. 

Repaint the walls.

While repainting the walls in your home will not make your home any bigger, it can create the illusion of space. For example, “light colors make a room look larger, especially if the space is bathed in natural light.” This is because they reflect the light, while darker colors absorb it somewhat. As such, you should also make sure you embrace natural light in your home as much as possible. This could mean swapping out heavy blackout curtains for lightweight blinds. Alternatively, you may even want to replace your current windows. 

You can take this to the next level by hanging mirrors throughout the space, which once again reflect the light and can make your room appear much bigger than it actually is. You can combine mirrors with wall art and other forms of decor to create a space that not only feels bigger but looks great too.
