Surprising Uses for Coconut Oil

The following contribution is from another author.

Coconut oil is one of the products that’s really been getting a lot of attention over the last 5 years or so, and especially within organic and health food communities – there’s good reason for this. This little oil is, not only considered to be one of the healthiest edible products around, but is also extremely versatile and can replace a whole range of things that are perhaps not as healthy or good for us when the coconut oil alternative is completely natural.

So, if you’ve never experimented with coconut oil before or you’ve only used it for cooking until now and are wondering what else you can use it for, then this post is for you.

Moisturizer:

Coconut oil is probably one of the best things you’ll ever put on your skin. Not only is is completely free from any chemicals and nasty ingredients found in commercial products, but it absorbs so well into the skin that it leaves it amazingly smooth and silky to touch. The trick with applying coconut oil to your skin is to do it after showering or bathing and you’ve towel patted your skin dry, but not completely dry. Damp skin allows the oil to absorb, but wet skin keeps it on the surface since oil and water don’t actually mix, so if you want the benefit of soft skin, then your skin should be damp, not wet. Just take a tablespoon size amount and allow it to melt in your hands, then apply it all over your body. You can change the quantity as needed until you’ve applied it all over.

Conditioner:

Coconut oil is a complete savior – especially for those who suffer from dry skin or hair in winter, or live in hard water areas and whose hair needs a little extra TLC. However, since coconut oil isn’t something you’ll apply to your hair daily it’s also recommended that you consider getting a home water filter if you live in a hard water area. Coconut oil is more like a deep conditioning treatment you apply to your hair every other week or so. To apply, make sure your hair is clean and dry, then apply it in the desired amount straight to the hair, making sure to massage from root to tip as well as the scalp. Leave it in for at least 20 minutes – though you can leave it in for a few hours or overnight if you have a really dry scalp, then wash it out using your normal shampoo and conditioner. Take care to make sure it’s all washed out since it’s very greasy and this won’t be the best look.

Mouthwash:

Thanks to its natural antiseptic properties, coconut oil has become highly popular with people looking for a more natural alternative to traditional mouthwash. The method used with coconut oil is called oil pulling, which involves putting a teaspoon of hardened oil directly in your mouth and swishing it around for 20 minutes before discarding it in the trash can. Don’t spit the oil in the sink or toilet since this will clog it, and don’t swallow since then all the toxins pulled from your body will go straight back in.
