Steps You Can Take to Secure your New Home

If you have just bought a new home, then you will know how exciting it can be. At the same time, you do need to make sure that you’re not just focusing on your new property and all of the upgrades you can make to the decor. You need to take the time to assess the security of your home and what you can do to try to make it a safe place to live for years to come.

Take Note of Flimsy Locks and Doors

The first thing you need to do is take note of any flimsy doors or locks around the home. If you know that the door frame is not quite as sturdy as it could be, or if you know that the door hinge is not strong enough to hold the door fully, then this is a major security risk. If you want to help yourself here, then it’s wise for you to try to make sure that you are fitting hinge bolts or a security hinge. You may also want to replace any glass panels you have with laminated glass, as this is harder to smash when compared. All windows and locks should meet the current regulations as well. Modern windows don’t usually need extra locks, but you do need to make sure that you have a locking handle. If you can do this, then you will be able to make sure that you’re able to get the security boost you need.

Repair the Garage Door

If you have a garage door that has seen better days, then now is the time for you to think about getting it replaced. Replacing and repairing a garage door isn’t hard if you have a local professional who can help you with it. With that said, if you leave the garage door and don’t give any thought to how you could be making your home safer, then this is a big mistake, and one you will want to avoid. Your garage door is a major security risk if it’s not safe, and if you take the time to look at it now, you could save yourself a world of issues at a later date.

Protect your Valuables

Make sure that you don’t leave valuable items where they can be seen from the outside. If you have items that are commonly stolen, including jewellery, purses, watches, or even electronic goods, then this is a major mistake. If you want to do something about this, then it is so important that you install some tracking software so you can at least find out where things are if they do get stolen. Some software can be downloaded for free, which is great to say the least.

Outdoor Lighting

Having some outdoor lighting put up is a great idea. Good outdoor lighting that comes on automatically will deter burglars from your home, and it will also give you an extra layer of protection. Investing in lighting doesn’t have to be expensive either, so keep that in mind.
