Spruce Up Your Space: 3 Homemade Wall Art Projects

The following contribution is from another author.

Wall art is a wonderful way to breathe life into your home and upgrade the interiors. It hangs on your wall and adds real maturity to the room. You no longer have this bland empty space; you’ve got a room that looks cultured and classy.

To make things even better, you can create wall art at home with very few resources. There are loads of amazing projects to try, all of which are suitable for beginners. Here are a few of the best ones you can use to spruce up your space:

DIY Macrame Wall Hangings

Macrame wall hangings are hugely popular in many modern homes. You can buy ready-made pieces from various shops, and they really add style points to a room. Macrame is actually the term given to the technique used to create your pieces. It involves different threads composed of things like twine, yarn, hemp, etc. and you create various knots or loops to slowly make something special.

It can sound complicated, but following a macrame step-by-step guide will help you learn what to do. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be making a whole host of wall art projects that enhance your home decor. This type of art hangs well in pretty much any room but is particularly powerful in the living room or bedroom.

DIY Canvas Paintings

Next, you can get really artistic with some canvas paintings. Canvas is a wonderful material that adheres well to paint and just looks a bit classy. If you buy any canvas art, you’ll instantly see how it lights up a room and draws eyes to the walls. The right piece can be a focal point; a centerpiece for the room.

Of course, we’re not looking to buy any art here! Instead, you’re going to make it yourself. First, get yourself a nice canvas – the size will depend on the size of your room. If you have a very spacious room, you can probably afford a bigger canvas than someone with a much smaller room. Secondly, get the right paint for the job – ensure you choose paints that can be used on canvas. Thirdly, come up with your design idea. You can literally paint whatever you want here; it’s entirely up to you.

Those of you with an artistic background will be able to make really beautiful and unique things. If you’ve never painted in your life, but love the idea of DIY canvas paintings, there are a few ideas that may float your boat:

  • Abstract splatter canvas art – simply pick up a brush and fling it on the canvas. Repeat the process with other colors until you’ve made something that looks pretty artsy.
  • Children’s art – this is genius if you have young kids that like drawing. Get them to create their own small pieces of canvas art that you’ll hang on the walls. It brings a homely sense to your house that might be missing.
  • Wallpaper canvas art – okay, this is a bit of a cheat. If you can’t think of anything, consider buying some cheap stick-on wallpaper or contact paper. Stick it to the canvas and it looks like a lovely piece of art!

DIY Stenciled Wall Art

The third and final option is to create DIY stenciled wall art. This involves buying some stencils that you place against the wall. From here, you use paint to color in the stencil, leaving a lovely pattern on your walls.

It is such a simple and quick way to instantly transform a wall and make your interiors look better. You can get geometric patterns, stars, forest stencils, trees, and so many other cool patterns. The best thing about this is that it requires absolutely no artistic skills at all. You’re literally putting something against the wall and spraying paint over it.

But, if you did want to get creative, you could buy a range of different stencils and make your own patterns using them. It is completely up to you!

Wall art doesn’t need to be expensive or hard to source. Instead of splashing the cash on some costly art that you don’t actually like (you’re just buying it to seem classy) consider making your own projects. The three ideas above demonstrate just how easy it is to conjure up wall art in a flash. All of them can be done from the comfort of your home and you don’t need to be an expert painter or decorator to get things done. Which idea do you like the most? Give it a go, and see how it improves your home.
